I'm going to Brasil for 2 weeks, and I want some sort of guide, like a few page printout, to guide me through the grammar and words while I'm in the country surrounded by native speakers.
I've already done a google search, and found nothing I liked.
I may not have access to computers there. But i could download stuff to an i-pod.
Thanks for helping!
Get a Boyfriend while you are in there. A patient one
Apparently not. It is one of the most difficult languages one can learn as a second tongue.

Allophone and a quickley and funny explanation focusing on most commom Brazilian accents. And Yes I laugh so much because there are very funny accents in Brazil, hahaha. By the way, the Standard accent of Brazil is the Southeast accent - Sao Paulo accent - , even everybody of my city speaks like in Rio de Janeiro most of the time. And yeah, this is true.

My native language is Spanish and I have had a great interest in learning Portuguese. Is it actually possible for me to learn Portuguese online? Any websites that could be useful for me?
It should be a big help to know Spanish already. I'd suggest finding a Brazilian in your area to speak with, as the biggest problem I faced with my previous knowledge of Spanish, was the speaking part. That being said, there are big differences and one shouldn't write them off and think they can just use Spanish in Brazil, for example.
And would you agree that Spanish is a lot easier too?? - Thanks
Spanish is much easier and not the same (at all) as Portuguese. If you go to Brazil (I have family in Brasilia) and speak Spanish? They won’t know what you are saying - nor do most speak Engish. Portuguese is much more difficult than Spanish and not as universal so if making a choice I’d go with Spanish.
A web site where u have both the English word and the Portuguese word. and if possibale one that u can listen to someone say the words in Portuguese, for better understanding.

This is a very good site that teaches you how to say phrases and words (click on the word and you hear the sound).
It's a easy way to learn the basics.
Portuguese Lessons about Reading and Prununciation through useful examples of phrases that people in Brazil use everyday.
The objective is learn how to pronounce and write those sentences. All of them are important and will help you avoid lots of misunderstandings in a simple conversation or dangerous situation or to the people see some things very clear specially in reference to sexuality, misundersstandings about sexual options or risk situations or events involving the police and thieves.
In Language we must avoid any kind of prejudice. Besides if you want to learn a second language you have to know everything you can about it even bad words, cursing words and slangs that will make you surprised.

With one month serious self study, how much could I cram in a working knowledge of the language? Of course, I don't expect to be anywhere near fluent in a month, but enough to be able to buy things, ask prices, order food, read basic signs, etc, and prehaps know enough grammar to throw a basic sentence together.
Would it be possible to learn that in a month, and where would I start? Has anyone got any links to good websites, It doesn't matter whether its Brazilian or European Portuguese, the standard language is still virtually the same.
Thanks
hum… I think that in a month you'll be able to learn the basics only…
i love my mother tongue but i have to admit it's really difficult for foreigners…
